Shape Your Neighborhood
Mission
Shape Your Neighborhood works to increase engagement with neighborhood councils through awareness and partnerships with social impact-oriented organizations in Los Angeles.
CONTEXT
The Neighborhood Council system was established in 1999 to better represent Los Angeles' diverse communities. There are currently 99 councils, each representing about 38,000 individuals. Each NC receives $42k from the City per year to support initiatives that address local needs and champion community causes.
Neighborhood Councils are supported by the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (Empower LA). Oversight is provided by the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners.
IMPACT
As a result of the Shape Your Neighborhood initiative, the Global Shapers Los Angeles Hub was able to encourage local youth civic engagement through access to information and resources.
